The Clay Sculptor of Wuxi

(At the Foot of Huishan)

Wuxi's Huishan is famous throughout the world for its clay figurines.

In a century-old workshop in Huishan Ancient Town lived a female clay figurine artist named Jiang Qiaoyun, forty-nine, with a full figure and hands that could transform ordinary clay into lifelike works of art.

"The soul of clay figurines lies in hand warmth," she often said. "Cold machines can't create it."

(The Sculptor)

That spring, an art collector from Beijing came seeking traditional crafts.

"Teacher Jiang," he watched the figurine taking shape in her hands, "can you make a special one for me?"

Qiaoyun raised her head, her full face marked with traces of clay: "What kind?"

"One like you."

She laughed, a gleam in her eyes: "Then you must first get to know me."

(Clay and Flesh)

In the workshop late at night, she demonstrated the process of making clay figurines.

"First, you must knead the clay," she worked the moist clay in her hands, "to make it soft."

She spread clay on his hands, then guided him to touch her body.

"Can you feel it?" She undid her clothes, her full figure in the dim light like a statue waiting to be sculpted. "The human body, like clay, needs to be shaped with heart."

That night, they intertwined in the fragrance of clay.

(The Finished Work)

A month later, she placed a pair of clay figurines in his hands.

"This is us," she said. The figurines showed a man and woman standing in embrace.

"This is the most precious artwork I've ever collected."

She leaned into his arms, her full figure warm and soft: "The real artwork is here."

In the clay of Huishan, some shapes are more vivid than figurines...
