In the lacquerware workshop of Fuzhou's Three Lanes and Seven Alleys, a curvaceous artisan creates modern passion with ancient craft..."
The Lacquer Artist of Fuzhou
(Three Lanes and Seven Alleys)
In Fuzhou's Three Lanes and Seven Alleys, countless ancient crafts are hidden.
The most mysterious among them was a bodiless lacquerware workshop. The owner was named Zheng Qiyun, fifty years old, with a full figure and hands that could create lacquerware lighter than silk.
"Bodiless lacquer art," she often said, "is magic that turns clay into nothingness."
(A Hundred Turns, a Thousand Twists)
That spring, an Italian designer came seeking Eastern inspiration.
"Teacher Zheng," he marveled at the exquisiteness of a lacquerware piece, "how can it be so light?"
Qiyun smiled and placed the lacquerware in his palm: "Because it has shed its body. The shell remains, the core is empty."
She approached him, her full figure emanating the subtle fragrance of lacquer: "Like people, you must learn to let go to transcend."
(Layer Upon Layer)
In the workshop late at night, she showed him the secrets of lacquer art.
"Lacquerware requires dozens of layers," she said, while applying warm raw lacquer to his arm. "Each layer must wait for the previous one to dry."
He felt his skin grow slightly warm: "This is...?"
"This is my private formula," she undid her qipao, revealing a full figure as smooth as lacquer. "No allergies, only intoxication."
She applied the lacquer to herself, then pressed against his body: "Come, let us become a work of art."
(Shedding the Body, Changing the Bones)
"This feeling," in the morning, he looked at the lacquer marks remaining on their skin, "is like rebirth."
Qiyun was washing, her full figure especially moving in the morning light. "This is the meaning of shedding the body—breaking the old, becoming the new."
"Can I learn this craft?"
She turned and placed a small lacquer box in his hand: "This requires ten years of patience. But you can start by... getting to know me."
Deep in Fuzhou's lanes and alleys, some art must be felt with the body...
