The Ink Stone Carver of Anhui

(Land of Scholar's Tools)

Anhui's She County is the homeland of She ink stone, one of China's four famous ink stones.

The county's most outstanding ink stone carver was named Cheng Moxiang, forty-seven, with a full figure, yet able to carve the most delicate patterns.

"Ink stones are the soul of scholars," she often said. "Every piece must be carved with one's life."

(Seeking in the Deep Mountains)

That winter, a calligrapher from Taiwan came seeking an unparalleled ink stone.

"Teacher Cheng," he looked at the room full of ink stones, "which is your proudest work?"

Moxiang led him to an inner room and took out a dark ink stone from a cabinet: "This 'Dragon and Phoenix Auspicious,' I carved for three full years."

He reached out to touch it, feeling the stone was as delicate as a woman's skin.

"What does it feel like?" Moxiang asked, her full figure moving closer.

(Body as Ink Stone)

"Want to know how I carve?" she asked late at night.

She placed his hand on the ink stone, then guided it to her own body.

"First feel," she undid her clothes, her full figure in candlelight like uncarved jade, "then carve."

She guided his hand along her curves: "Light here, heavy there..."

That night, he learned the essence of carving on her body.

(Sealing Love with an Ink Stone)

"This ink stone," she handed him the Dragon and Phoenix the next day, "is for you."

"This is three years of your effort..."

"That's exactly why I'm giving it to you." She smiled, her full face showing deep affection. "An ink stone only has meaning when it meets someone who understands it."

"I will write your name with it," he said, "every day."
