The Purple Clay Master of Yixing
(Legend of the Pottery Capital)
Yixing purple clay teapots are world-famous, honored as "the king of tea vessels."
The most famous female purple clay master in town was named Gu Zixuan, forty-eight, with a full figure, hands that could shape the most exquisite teapot forms.
"Purple clay pots nurture people," she often said. "A good pot should be used for a lifetime."
(Universe in a Teapot)
That spring, a Taiwanese tea master came to commission a custom teapot.
"Teacher Gu," he looked at the room full of purple clay pots, "which is your proudest work?"
Zixuan took out a simple small pot from the cabinet, her full fingers gently caressing the pot's body.
"This one," she said. "It took me three years."
"It looks ordinary..."
"The beauty of purple clay pots," she smiled, "lies within, not in appearance."
(Mud and Fire)
"Want to learn pot-making?" That night, she invited him to stay.
She took him to the backyard studio, placing purple clay in his hands.
"Making pots starts with kneading clay," she stood behind him, her full figure against his back, guiding his hands. "The force must be even, like kneading a woman."
In the glow of kiln fire, they unknowingly became one.
(Breaking In the Pot)
"New pots need 'breaking in,'" she handed him a freshly kilned teapot. "Nurture it with good tea to bring out the flavor."
"How long does it take?"
"A lifetime," she smiled, her full face showing the wisdom of years. "Like people."
He held her hand: "Then let's nurture it together."
In Yixing's kiln fire, some shaping lasts longer than purple clay...
