The Dai Peacock Dancer of Xishuangbanna
At Xishuangbanna's Water Splashing Festival, a curvaceous Dai dancer conquers every heart with her peacock dance..."
The Dai Peacock Dancer
(Land of Peacocks)
Xishuangbanna is the homeland of peacocks, and the Dai people worship peacocks like deities.
The village's finest peacock dance inheritor was named Yu Han, forty-five, with a full figure, dancing like a living peacock.
"Peacock dance isn't danced with the body," she often said, "but with the soul."
(Night of the Water Festival)
That year during the Water Splashing Festival, a Beijing dance choreographer came for research.
"Sister Yu Han," after watching her performance, "your dance is stunning."
Yu Han had just come offstage, her full figure tightly wrapped in soaked Dai clothing, curves fully revealed.
"That was just performance," she smiled, water droplets sliding down her full skin. "True peacock dance is most beautiful under moonlight."
(Peacock Under the Moon)
"Want to see the real peacock dance?" That night, she took him to the bamboo grove behind the village.
Moonlight fell through the bamboo, fireflies dotting the air.
She changed into a golden peacock dance costume and began to dance.
Her full figure was like a peacock spreading its tail in the moonlight, every movement full of allure.
"Peacocks spread their tails to court mates," she danced before him, undoing her costume's ties. "And so am I, now."
(Phoenix Flowers Bloom)
"I want to bring your dance to Beijing's stages," he said at dawn.
Yu Han lay on the bamboo mat of the stilted house, her full figure still warm from the night.
"My dance belongs to this land," she said, "but my heart can go with you."
"Then I'll come every Water Splashing Festival," he said, "to watch you dance, to accompany you till old age."
She picked a fiery red phoenix flower and pinned it to his chest: "This is the Dai people's love flower. Every year when phoenix flowers bloom, I'll wait for you here."
Under Xishuangbanna's moonlight, some dances are more moving than a peacock spreading its tail...
