In a dye workshop of Wuzhen's ancient alleys, a curvaceous dyer creates the most touching love with blue and white..."

The Indigo Dyer of Wuzhen

(Between Blue and White)

Wuzhen's blue calico has a thousand years of history, the interweaving of blue and white like ink paintings.

The largest dye workshop in the ancient town belonged to Qian Lanyi, forty-eight, with a full figure, her hands perpetually dyed deep blue by indigo.

"The beauty of blue calico," she often said, "lies in imperfection. Every piece of cloth is unique."

(The Cloth-Drying Corridor)

That year at Qingming, a French fashion designer came to Wuzhen seeking inspiration.

"Sister Qian," he stood under the cloth-drying corridor, watching blue fabric dancing in the air, "this scene is too beautiful."

Lanyi was dyeing cloth, her full arms immersed in the indigo vat, her skin forming a striking contrast with the blue.

"More beautiful than this," she looked up at him, "is the dyeing process. Want to try?"

(Spring Night in the Dye Workshop)

"Dyeing requires heart," that night, she taught him to prepare dye.

The workshop was filled with indigo fragrance. She stood behind him, her full figure pressed against his back.

"Put your hands in," she held his hands, dipping them together into the vat, "feel the temperature of blue."

He turned around. Her face was inches away, lips bearing traces of blue.

"The secret of blue calico," she whispered, undoing her blue cloth apron, "is to feel it with your body."

Her full figure bore blue fingerprints, like the most beautiful patterns.

(A Universe in Cloth)

"I want to create a collection with your blue calico," at dawn, he looked at the drying fabric.

Lanyi was organizing last night's dyed cloth, her full figure moving between blue and white fabrics.

"This cloth contains my story," she said, "and now yours too."

"Then I'll come every year," he said, "to design new patterns for you, using our story."

She wrapped a blue calico cloth embroidered with twin fish around his neck: "This is what I dyed for you. Twin fish mean never parting."

In Wuzhen's dye workshops, some colors run deeper than blue...
