The Grape Grower of Turpan
Beneath the grape arbors of Turpan, Xinjiang, a curvaceous Uyghur hostess welcomes guests with the sweetest grapes and most passionate heart..."
The Grape Grower of Turpan
(Grape Valley)
Beneath Turpan's Flaming Mountains lies an oasis called "Grape Valley."
The largest vineyard here belonged to Ayiguli, forty-six, Uyghur, with a full figure and skin bronzed to an alluring honey color by the sun.
"Why are Turpan grapes so sweet?" she often asked guests. "Because the sunshine here is the hottest, and women's hearts are the hottest too."
(A Traveler on the Silk Road)
That summer, an Israeli agricultural expert came to study desert farming.
"Sister Ayiguli," he marveled at the grapes' sweetness, "how do you grow such wonderful grapes in such a hot place?"
Ayiguli wore brightly colored atlas silk, her full figure swaying gracefully beneath the grape arbor.
"The secret is underground," she smiled mysteriously. "Turpan has karez wells, and... other things."
(By the Karez Well)
Late at night, she took him to see the ancient karez well.
"This is thousand-year-old wisdom," she said. "Underground water flows here, bringing life to the desert."
By the well, cool breezes blew, a sharp contrast to the daytime heat.
"In the desert," she untied the belt of her atlas silk, her full figure in the moonlight as lush as grapes, "water and women are equally precious."
She guided his hand into the well water: "Can you feel it? This is the source of life."
That night, by the karez well, they tasted flavors sweeter than grapes.
(The Secret of Raisins)
"Do you know how raisins are made?" In the morning, she took him to the drying house.
Thousands of grapes hung in the drying house, slowly becoming golden raisins.
"It takes time," she said, "and love."
She stuffed a string of freshly dried raisins into his mouth: "Come again when the grapes ripen next year. I'll save the sweetest bunch for you."
In the Grape Valley beneath the Flaming Mountains, some sweetness is more intoxicating than grapes...
