The Baker of Ksar el-Kebir

Chapter One

I have baked in the Ksar el-Kebir oven for forty years.

A food blogger came wanting to learn.

"I want the secret of Moroccan bread."

Chapter Two

He was in his fifties, handsome, interested in details.

"The secret is in the dough and time."

"Teach me."

Chapter Three

I taught him how to knead with his hands.

"With strength... then gently."

"Like treating a woman?" he joked.

Chapter Four

I laughed. "Dough understands touch."

"And you understand dough."

"I know it more than anything."

Chapter Five

We spent days in the oven.

Heat, flour, and the smell of bread.

"Why didn't you marry again?"

Chapter Six

"The oven has been my husband since my first husband died."

"But the oven doesn't warm the heart."

"You are right..."

Chapter Seven

That night, after closing the oven.

In the warmth of the hot clay.

"You are more delicious than any bread."

Chapter Eight

He wrote an article about Moroccan bread.

And dedicated it to me.

"The baker who taught me bread and love."

Conclusion

Bread brings people together.

At the table and in the heart.

And we baked our love in the oven of destiny.
