The Carpet Weaver of Kashgar
In a Kashgar old city workshop, a curvaceous Uyghur weaver creates beauty and love with thousand-year techniques..."
The Carpet Weaver of Kashgar
(Ancient Silk Road City)
Kashgar, one of the most important oasis cities on the Silk Road.
The most famous carpet workshop in the old city was run by Reyhan, forty-six, Uyghur, with a full figure, able to weave the most exquisite handmade carpets.
"Every carpet," she often said, "has a story."
(The Collector)
That autumn, a Turkish antique dealer came seeking the most authentic Central Asian carpets.
"Sister Reyhan," he looked at the pattern forming on her loom, "what pattern is this?"
Reyhan raised her head, a mysterious smile on her full face beneath her atlas headscarf.
"This is 'pomegranate flower,'" she said. "It symbolizes many children and blessings. But this carpet's story isn't finished yet."
(Night at the Loom)
"Want to know how the carpet's story ends?" That night, she invited him to stay.
In the workshop, only the sound of the loom and starlight outside remained.
"Every thread is destiny," she said, continuing to weave. "Interwoven, they become life."
She stopped, undoing her headscarf and outer robe, her full figure against the carpets like a painting.
"Come," she pulled him onto a finished carpet, "let's write a story for this carpet."
(A New Pattern)
"Will you take this carpet with you?" she asked, starting work on a new loom.
He looked at the carpet that witnessed their story: "No. I want to leave it here, with you."
"Why?"
"Because I want to come back every year," he said, "to watch you add new patterns to it."
She laughed, her full fingers continuing to dance on the loom: "Then this carpet will never be finished."
In Kashgar's old city, some weaving lasts longer than carpets...
