The Pu'erh Merchant of Yunnan

(Fragrance on the Ancient Road)

In the deep mountains of Xishuangbanna, Yunnan, there stood an ancient tea estate.

The estate's owner was named Yang Yulan, fifty years old, with a full figure and skin bronzed to a healthy honey color by the highland sun.

"Pu'erh tea is like a woman," she often said. "The older, the more fragrant."

(Rendezvous in the Tea Mountains)

That spring, a Japanese tea ceremony researcher came here seeking top-grade ancient tree tea.

"The best tea," Yulan led him through the tea gardens, "grows in the most treacherous places."

She climbed the steep hillside, her full hips swaying gracefully beneath her ethnic minority attire.

"Keep up," she looked back at him, challenge in her eyes, "or can't you handle it?"

(Spring and Autumn in the Tea Room)

At night, she brewed tea for him in her private tea room.

"This is tea I've stored for thirty years," she said. "I only share it with those destined to taste it."

She poured the tea liquor into his cup, then sat beside him, her full thigh pressing against his.

"Tea should be drunk while hot," she whispered. "Love should also be seized while warm."

He set down his cup and wrapped his arms around her full waist. That night, they entwined in the fragrance of tea.

(Mountains High, Waters Long)

"What will you take with you?" she asked in the morning.

"These tea cakes," he said, "and your taste."

She smiled, placing a tea cake carved with the character "缘" (fate) in his hand: "Every time you drink this tea, think of me."

"I'll return next spring tea season."

"I'll wait for you." She stood in the morning mist of the tea mountains. "My tea room will always be open for you."
