The Banker's Widow of Pingyao
(Land of Shanxi Merchants)
Within the walls of ancient Pingyao lie countless legends of Shanxi merchants.
The largest mansion in the city belonged to the Pei family. The current owner, Pei Yuhua, fifty, was the last descendant of the Pei family bank. Her figure was full, her manner dignified, widowed for ten years.
"What our ancestors left," she often said, "isn't just gold and silver, but responsibility."
(An Old Acquaintance Visits)
That Mid-Autumn Festival, an American Chinese finance professor came to study Shanxi merchant history.
"Ms. Pei," he looked at the antiques and ledgers filling the courtyard, "these are priceless."
Yuhua poured tea for him, her qipao wrapping her full, dignified figure: "These ledgers record the wisdom of generations. Would you like to learn?"
His gaze fell on her, and suddenly he felt the woman before him was more fascinating than any history.
(The Secret Counting Room)
Late at night, she led him to an underground chamber.
"This is the Pei family vault," she lit a candle. "Never shown to outsiders."
Gold bars and silver ingots covering the walls glittered in the candlelight, but his gaze stayed on her.
"This wealth needs to be inherited," she turned around, loneliness of ten years in her eyes, "and I... have been alone too long."
She undid her qipao, her full figure among the gold and silver like a precious statue.
(A New Ledger)
"Will you write this history into your book?" she asked at dawn.
He watched her dress in the morning light, her full figure dignified yet alluring.
"I'll write of Shanxi merchant wisdom," he said, "but our story belongs only to us."
She smiled and placed an ancient silver ingot in his hand: "This is a token. Next Mid-Autumn Festival, I'll wait for you."
In the deep courtyards of Pingyao, some treasures are more precious than gold and silver...
