The Cashmere Weaver of Ordos
On the Ordos grassland of Inner Mongolia, a curvaceous Mongolian weaver creates warmth with the softest cashmere..."
The Cashmere Weaver of Ordos
Chapter One
Ordos cashmere is called "soft gold," the world's most precious fiber.
Deep in the grassland, herder Ulanqiqige, forty-eight, with a full figure, was the area's most outstanding cashmere comber.
"Each goat yields only a few dozen grams of cashmere," she often said. "So treasure it."
Chapter Two
That spring, an Italian luxury brand's purchasing manager came to the grassland seeking the best cashmere raw materials.
"Sister Ulan," he touched freshly combed cashmere, "this texture... incredible."
Ulan wore traditional Mongolian robes, her full figure especially robust in the grassland sunlight.
"Because I comb with my heart," she said. "Like treating my own children."
Chapter Three
That night, she invited him to stay in her yurt.
"Grassland nights are cold," she said, draping a cashmere blanket over him. "I wove this."
The blanket was cloud-soft; he could barely feel its presence.
"The world's best warmth," she moved closer, her full figure softer than any cashmere, "is human body heat."
Chapter Four
"This batch of cashmere," she handed him a large bag of select cashmere, "is the best I saved for you."
"I'll make it into the most precious garments."
"Remember," she smiled, grassland weathering on her full face, "to return every spring during cashmere combing season."
On the Ordos grassland, some softness is more precious than cashmere...
