The Night Market Vendor of Kaifeng

(Thousand-Year Bianliang)

Kaifeng, anciently called Bianliang, was once the prosperous capital of the Northern Song Dynasty.

The most popular stall in the Drum Tower Night Market belonged to Song Xiulan, forty-six, with a full figure, selling ancestral soup dumplings and almond tea.

"This recipe was passed down from the Song Dynasty," she often said. "A thousand years of flavor cannot be changed."

(Seeking Flavors in the Ancient Capital)

That year during the Chrysanthemum Festival, a Taiwanese historian came to Kaifeng to study Song culture.

"Boss Song," he ate the soup dumplings, his eyes lighting up, "this flavor... it's like walking out of 'Along the River During Qingming Festival.'"

Xiulan smiled and added another steamer: "You understand. Here, this one's on me."

She sat across from him, her full figure made even more alluring wrapped in an apron: "Want to know more thousand-year-old secrets?"

(After the Night Market Closes)

After closing, she invited him to see her collection of ancient recipes.

"This is my family's ancestral cookbook," she unfolded the yellowed booklet. "Passed down from the Northern Song until now."

He looked at the ancient handwriting, amazed.

"But the most precious recipe," she closed the booklet and undid her apron, "isn't in the book."

She placed his hand on her full waist: "It's here."

(New Stories in the Ancient Capital)

"What will your research include?" she asked at dawn, while preparing ingredients for the morning market.

He watched her full figure busy at work: "I'll write about Song Dynasty food culture, but tonight's story belongs only to us."

"Then you must come often," she turned and handed him a steaming bowl of almond tea. "A thousand years of flavor needs to be savored slowly."
