The Traditional Medicine Doctor of Hefei
In an old Chinese medicine clinic in Hefei, a curvaceous female TCM doctor diagnoses bodies and souls through observation, listening, inquiry, and palpation..."
The Traditional Medicine Doctor of Hefei
(Xin'an Medical School)
Hefei is one of the birthplaces of the Xin'an medical school, where TCM traditions have been passed down for generations.
The most famous female TCM doctor in the city was named Hu Xinglin, forty-eight, with a full figure, the eighth-generation inheritor of the Xin'an school.
"TCM looks not at illness, but at the person," she often said. "Body and mind are inseparable."
(Difficult and Complicated Cases)
That winter, an investor from Shanghai came for treatment. Western medicine found nothing wrong, yet he felt unwell all over.
"Dr. Hu," he extended his wrist, "please diagnose me."
Xinglin pressed his pulse, her full fingers sensitively feeling the changes in his pulse pattern.
"Your illness is of the heart," she raised her head, "not of the body."
He froze, his eyes reddening.
(Medicine and Emotion)
"Heart illness needs heart medicine," that night, she invited him to the inner room to talk.
She decocted a prescription for him, then sat across from him.
"Tell me your story." Her voice was as gentle as spring wind.
He talked for a long time, about his failed marriage, about lonely nights. She listened quietly.
"I can prescribe medicine," she stood, her full figure especially warm amid the medicinal fragrance, "but the best prescription is here."
She placed his hand on her heart.
(The Healer's Benevolent Heart)
Three months later, his "illness" was cured.
"Dr. Hu," he said, "you saved me."
Xinglin was preparing medicine, her full figure especially moving before the medicine cabinet.
"I only opened a door," she turned around. "You walked out yourself."
"I want to stay in Hefei," he said, "stay by your side."
She laughed: "Then you must learn to decoct medicine. TCM emphasizes timing and heat. So does life."
In the medicinal fragrance of Hefei, some healing transcends the realm of medicine...
