The Coconut Seller of Haikou

(The Arcade Old Street)

Haikou is called "Coconut City," with rows of coconut palms lining the streets.

The coconut stall on the arcade old street was run by Fu Yehua, forty-five, with a full figure, skin bronzed to a healthy honey color by the tropical sun.

"Hainan's coconuts are the sweetest," she often said, "because they absorb sunlight and sea breeze."

(A Northern Visitor)

That winter, a retired teacher from the Northeast came to Hainan to escape the cold.

"Boss lady," he drank fresh coconut water, "this coconut is so sweet, different from back home."

Yehua laughed and opened another coconut, her full arms powerful yet graceful.

"The North is too cold," she said. "You should stay. It's warm here."

Her gaze was warmer than the tropical sun.

(Deep in the Coconut Grove)

"Want to see a real coconut grove?" That day, she invited him to her family's coconut plantation.

The coconut grove blocked out the sky, sea breezes blowing.

"My grandmother left me this coconut grove," she said, her full figure especially moving beneath the palms. "I've guarded it half my life."

"Alone?"

"Yes," she lowered her head. "My husband left early."

He approached and embraced her. In the shade of coconut palms, they found warmth in each other.

(Migratory Bird Nesting)

"I want to stay in Hainan," he said, "to be a 'migratory bird.'"

Yehua was picking coconuts, her full figure especially healthy in the sunlight.

"Migratory birds fly away," she said.

"But if they find a nest," he took the coconut she'd picked, "they never leave again."

She laughed, her laughter rustling like coconut leaves in the sea breeze: "Then my coconut grove is your nest."

In Haikou's coconut groves, some sweetness is fresher than coconut water...
