The Martial Nun of Mount Emei

(Buddha Light at Golden Summit)

Mount Emei is one of China's four great Buddhist mountains and the birthplace of Emei martial arts.

The martial arts instructor at Fuhu Temple was Venerable Jingci, secular name Zhao Yaqing, forty-nine, with a full figure yet extraordinary skills.

"Emei kung fu emphasizes using softness to overcome hardness," she often said, "as Buddhist dharma emphasizes transforming violence with compassion."

(The Seeker)

That summer, a dejected Shenzhen entrepreneur climbed the mountain seeking answers.

"Venerable," he knelt before Buddha, "I've lost everything. I don't know how to continue living."

Jingci looked at him, compassion on her full face: "Rise. Buddha is not found in kneeling, but in practice."

"How should I practice?"

"Start with martial arts." She stood up. "When you can control your body, you can control your mind."

(Practicing Under Moonlight)

A month later, his kung fu had improved, but his heart's illness remained uncured.

"Venerable," he asked during late-night practice, "why did you become a nun?"

Jingci stopped moving, moonlight falling on her full figure: "Because I too once lost everything."

She undid the outer layer of her monastic robe, revealing the tight practice clothes beneath: "But I found rebirth in martial arts."

That night, she used her body to teach him what "using softness to overcome hardness" meant.

(Enlightenment)

"What have I realized?" he asked when leaving the mountain.

Jingci was doing morning practice, her full figure in the sunrise like Guanyin.

"You've realized," she smiled, "attachment is suffering, letting go is joy."

"What about us?"

"Come and go freely," she pressed her palms together in greeting. "This is Emei's wisdom."

In Mount Emei's mists, some practice transcends the boundaries of dharma...
