The Mural Restorer of Dunhuang

(Pearl of the Desert)

The Mogao Caves of Dunhuang, the pearl of the Silk Road.

The person guarding these murals in the desert was named Zhang Min, forty-eight, with a full figure, yet willing to devote her youth to this millennia-old art.

"Murals breathe," she often said. "You must learn to converse with them."

(A Visitor from the Western Regions)

That spring, a French art historian came to Dunhuang to study the murals.

"Teacher Zhang," he stood before the Flying Apsaras mural, "how have these colors been preserved for a thousand years?"

Zhang Min walked to his side, her figure seeming to overlap with the full-figured Flying Apsaras in the mural.

"Because of love," she said. "The love of generation after generation of guardians."

He looked at her and suddenly felt that the woman before him was more beautiful than any mural.

(Whispers in the Cave)

Late at night, she took him into a cave not open to the public.

"Here are the oldest Tantric murals," her flashlight illuminated the walls, "including... the Joyful Buddha."

On the mural, the entwined figures of man and woman came alive in the candlelight.

"The ancients believed," she said softly, "this was the path to paradise."

She turned off the flashlight. In the darkness, only their breathing remained.

"Do you want to experience it?" she asked. "The paradise of a thousand years ago."

(Silk Road Romance)

"I must go," he said months later, "but I will return."

Zhang Min stood before the cave, the desert wind lifting her hair.

"These murals have waited a thousand years," she smiled. "I can wait a few more."

He embraced her full figure: "I'll return with my research, to let the world know of the beauty here."

"Including me?" she asked playfully.

"Especially you." He kissed her. "You are Dunhuang's most beautiful mural."

In the yellow sands of Dunhuang, some loves are as eternal as the murals...
