The Chinatown Restaurant of Boston

(Homeland in a Foreign Land)

In a corner of Boston's Chinatown, there was a Cantonese restaurant that had been open for thirty years.

The owner was named Chen Meiling, fifty, from Guangdong, with a full figure. After immigrating to America over twenty years ago, she always maintained her hometown's flavors.

"No matter how far from home," she often said, "you never forget your mother's flavors."

(Chinese New Year Story)

That Chinese New Year, a Chinese student who had just arrived in Boston came alone for New Year's Eve dinner.

"Just you alone?" Meiling looked at this young man, remembering her younger self.

He nodded, his eyes a bit red.

"Come," she personally served a table of dishes, her full figure emanating maternal warmth. "Tonight, you're my child."

(Kitchen Stories)

After the festival, he often came to help.

"Auntie," he learned to cook in the kitchen, "why don't you go back to China?"

Meiling was stir-frying, her full figure especially vivid amid the cooking smoke.

"This is my home now too," she said. "But my heart is always in Guangdong."

She taught him to make char siu, roast goose, sweet soup, and how to survive in a foreign land.

Gradually, two lonely hearts drew closer.

(The Taste of Home)

"I graduated," years later, he came to see her with his diploma.

Meiling was preparing to open, a gratified smile on her full face.

"What do you plan to do now?"

"I want to stay here," he walked before her, "with you, to continue this restaurant."

She paused, then laughed: "This restaurant needs young people... and needs you."
