The Hotpot Queen of Chengdu

(Deep in the Old Alleys)

Near the Wide and Narrow Alleys of Chengdu, there was a hotpot restaurant known only to locals.

The owner, Liu Hongmei, forty-six, with a full and fiery figure, had a personality like her hotpot—numbing, spicy, and irresistibly flavorful.

"Afraid of spice?" she always asked new customers. "Then you've come to the wrong place."

(A Touch of Heat)

On that rainy night, a food writer from Taiwan walked into her restaurant.

"Give me the spiciest," he said.

Hongmei looked him up and down, a smile curling at her lips: "Are you sure? The heat here isn't something ordinary people can handle."

She brought out a pot of fiery red broth, the aroma of Sichuan peppercorns and chilies filling the air.

"Take it slow," she sat across from him, her full thighs beneath the qipao appearing and disappearing from view. "Good things must be savored slowly."

(The Hotter, the Better)

After closing time, she invited him to taste her "private dishes."

"This is my secret chili sauce," she dipped a finger in it and brought it to his lips. "Taste?"

He licked the sauce from her fingertip, the heat bringing tears to his eyes, yet he couldn't stop.

"Spicy enough?" she asked, undoing the buttons of her qipao.

"Not enough," he pulled her into his arms. "I want it even spicier."

That night, their passion boiled hotter than a nine-grid hotpot.

(Lingering Aftertaste)

"What will you write?" she asked in the morning, while cooking steaming red-oil wontons.

He watched her full figure from behind and smiled: "I'll write that the best thing in Chengdu isn't the hotpot."

"Then what is it?"

"It's the Hotpot Queen."

She turned around, her face flushed redder than chili: "Then you must come often. My hotpot will always be ready for you."
