The Date Harvest of Zagora
Chapter One
I have grown palm trees in Zagora for thirty years.
A researcher came studying date cultivation.
"I want to understand the secret of your delicious dates."
Chapter Two
She was in her forties, intelligent, curious.
"The secret is in sun, water, and love."
"Love?" she asked surprised.
Chapter Three
"Yes, we love our palms like our children."
"I want to see how you love it."
"Come with me to the oasis."
Chapter Four
In the oasis, under the palm shade.
"This tree is a hundred years old."
"More beautiful than any tree I've seen."
Chapter Five
I picked a date and offered it to her.
"Taste the sweetness of Zagora."
"Very sweet... like your smile."
Chapter Six
"Why don't you marry again?" she asked me.
"My wife died and left me with the palms."
"Perhaps you need human companionship."
Chapter Seven
That night, in my mud house.
Under the sound of wind in the palm fronds.
"Your body is sweet like dates."
Chapter Eight
She finished her research and returned.
But she returns every harvest season.
"The dates call me... and so do you."
Conclusion
The oasis is a place of life in the desert.
And we found life together.
A love sweet like Zagora dates.
