Willesden Woman

by Anastasia Chrome|2 min read|
"Property developer James plans to demolish the Willesden community center, but community organizer Denise fights back—and their battle becomes something neither expected."

The community center was in the way. James's development plan required its demolition.

Then he met the opposition.

Denise was thick and furious, standing at the council meeting like a warrior.

"Yuh want to destroy a hundred years of community for luxury flats?"

"I want to improve the area."

"Improve?" She laughed bitterly. "Come see what yuh destroying first."

He came. Saw elders playing dominoes. Kids doing homework. Lives happening.

"Yuh still want to demolish this?" Denise asked.

"I... I need to rethink."

"Rethink fast. We got lawyers too."

"Can we talk? Privately?"

"About what?"

"About how we both get what we want."

Private talks at her flat. Plans and compromises and her hand on his arm.

"Yuh not what I expected," she admitted.

"Neither are you."

"I expected a villain."

"I expected a troublemaker."

"And now?"

"Now I expect to keep looking at you."

The plan changed. Center preserved. Development adjusted. Everyone won.

What happened after the announcement won something different.

"Yes! James! Right there!"

That thick body celebrating victory in ways only they knew. Former enemies, current lovers.

"Don't stop! This the best negotiation ever!"

The development thrived. The center stayed. The community celebrated.

James and Denise, together.

"Yuh my toughest opponent," he says.

"And yuh my best partner." She kisses him. "In everything."

Willesden Woman became a local legend.

The developer she defeated and captured.

Love from conflict.

Building together.

Always.
