Saba Secrets

by Anastasia Chrome|2 min read|
"On tiny Saba island, nurse Helena knows everyone's business—including the heartbreak of visiting doctor Marcus, which she heals with Caribbean care both medical and very personal."

Saba had five hundred residents. Helena knew them all.

The new doctor was number five hundred and one. Temporary. Heartbroken. She could tell.

"Yuh running from something," she said on day one.

"That obvious?"

"On an island this small? Everything obvious." She handed him coffee. "But secrets safe with mi."

Working together was inevitable. The clinic was small. So was the island.

"Yuh good doctor," she admitted after a week. "Patients like yuh."

"What about you?"

"Mi... appreciating yuh more every day." Her thick body brushed past him. "Stay late tonight. We have paperwork."

The paperwork was real. So was what came after.

"Yuh still hurt," she said. "Mi can see it."

"She left. Took everything."

"Not everything." Helena took his hands. "Yuh still here. Yuh still alive. Let mi show yuh what that means."

She showed him in the clinic after hours. That thick body healing him in ways medicine couldn't.

"Yes! Marcus! Right there!"

Her touch clinical and passionate, her knowledge of bodies extending to every form of care.

"Don't stop! Mi healing yuh!"

She healed him completely. Slowly. Over months.

"The temporary assignment ends next week," he said.

"So apply for permanent."

"Would you want that?"

She answered by showing him again what she wanted.

Dr. Marcus Baptiste-Helena runs Saba's clinic now.

His wife assists.

The island knows their secret.

Everyone does.

And everyone approves.

Saba's smallest, sweetest secret.

No longer secret at all.
