The Fisherman's Daughter
الفصلُ الأَوَّلُ: البِنْتُ الَّتِي أَحَبَّتِ البَحْرَ
Chapter One: The Girl Who Loved the Sea
عَلى ساحِلِ صُورَ، عاشَ صَيَّادٌ فَقِيرٌ يُدْعَى راشِدًا. كانَ لَهُ ابْنَةٌ وَحِيدَةٌ تُدْعَى مَيَّةَ. أَحَبَّتْ مَيَّةُ البَحْرَ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ أَيِّ شَيْءٍ.
On the coast of Sur, a poor fisherman named Rashid lived. He had an only daughter called Mayya. Mayya loved the sea more than anything.
كُلَّ صَباحٍ، كانَتْ تَذْهَبُ مَعَ أَبِيها لِلصَّيْدِ. تَعَلَّمَتْ كَيْفَ تَقْرَأُ النُّجُومَ وَالرِّياحَ وَالأَمْواجَ.
Every morning, she would go fishing with her father. She learned how to read the stars, winds, and waves.
قالَ لَها أَبُوها: «أَنْتِ تَفْهَمِينَ البَحْرَ أَفْضَلَ مِنْ أَيِّ وَلَدٍ!»
Her father said to her: "You understand the sea better than any boy!"
الفصلُ الثَّانِي: المَوْتُ المُفاجِئُ
Chapter Two: The Sudden Death
ذاتَ يَوْمٍ، ماتَ راشِدٌ فِي البَحْرِ. عاصِفَةٌ أَخَذَتْهُ وَلَمْ تُعِدْهُ.
One day, Rashid died at sea. A storm took him and never returned him.
صارَتْ مَيَّةُ وَحِيدَةً، بِلا مالٍ وَلا مُعِيلٍ. أَرادَتْ أَنْ تَعْمَلَ كَصَيَّادَةٍ، لَكِنَّ الرِّجالَ سَخِرُوا مِنْها.
Mayya became alone, without money or provider. She wanted to work as a fisher, but the men mocked her.
قالُوا: «الصَّيْدُ لِلرِّجالِ! اِذْهَبِي وَتَزَوَّجِي!»
They said: "Fishing is for men! Go get married!"
لَكِنَّ مَيَّةَ رَفَضَتْ. قالَتْ: «سَأُثْبِتُ أَنَّنِي أَفْضَلُ مِنْكُمْ جَمِيعًا!»
But Mayya refused. She said: "I shall prove I am better than all of you!"
الفصلُ الثَّالِثُ: الإِثْباتُ الكَبِيرُ
Chapter Three: The Great Proof
اشْتَرَتْ مَيَّةُ قارِبًا صَغِيرًا بِما تَبَقَّى مِنْ مالِها. وَبَدَأَتْ تَصِيدُ وَحْدَها.
Mayya bought a small boat with what remained of her money. She began fishing alone.
كانَ صَيْدُها دائِمًا أَفْضَلَ! لِأَنَّها تَعْرِفُ أَماكِنَ السَّمَكِ وَأَوْقاتَهُ.
Her catch was always better! Because she knew where and when the fish were.
ذاتَ مَرَّةٍ، تاهَتْ سَفِينَةُ تُجَّارٍ فِي ضَبابٍ كَثِيفٍ. كانُوا يَخافُونَ الاِصْطِدامَ بِالصُّخُورِ.
Once, a merchant ship was lost in thick fog. They feared crashing into rocks.
رَأَتْهُمْ مَيَّةُ وَقادَتْهُمْ إِلى المِيناءِ بِأَمانٍ. قالَ الرُّبَّانُ مَذْهُولاً: «كَيْفَ عَرَفْتِ الطَّرِيقَ؟»
Mayya saw them and led them to the harbor safely. The captain said in amazement: "How did you know the way?"
قالَتْ: «البَحْرُ يَتَحَدَّثُ لِمَنْ يَسْمَعُ.»
She said: "The sea speaks to those who listen."
الفصلُ الرَّابِعُ: المُرْشِدَةُ الأُسْطُورِيَّةُ
Chapter Four: The Legendary Navigator
ذاعَ صِيتُها، وَصارَ التُّجَّارُ يَطْلُبُونَها لِإِرْشادِ سُفُنِهِمْ. صارَتْ أَشْهَرَ مُرْشِدَةٍ فِي عُمانَ.
Her fame spread, and merchants sought her to guide their ships. She became the most famous navigator in Oman.
الرِّجالُ الَّذِينَ سَخِرُوا مِنْها صارُوا يَعْمَلُونَ عِنْدَها!
The men who mocked her came to work for her!
قالَتْ لِلْفَتَياتِ: «لا تَدَعُوا أَحَدًا يُخْبِرُكُنَّ بِما تَسْتَطِعْنَ. أَنْتُنَّ مَنْ تُحَدِّدْنَ حُدُودَكُنَّ.»
She said to the girls: "Do not let anyone tell you what you can do. You are the ones who define your limits."
