The Midnight Garden of Marrakech
Chapter One
I have tended Marrakech riad gardens for thirty years.
A botanist came studying night-blooming flowers.
"I want to see flowers that bloom at night."
Chapter Two
She was in her fifties, calm as the night.
"Jasmine blooms at midnight."
"I'll wait with you."
Chapter Three
We sat in the garden waiting.
"Why do you love flowers?" she asked me.
"Because they are honest... they bloom and die honestly."
Chapter Four
"And humans?"
"Humans hide... that's why I prefer flowers."
"And your wife?"
Chapter Five
"She died with a rose in her hand."
"Beautiful... and sad."
"Beauty and sadness mix like jasmine and night."
Chapter Six
At midnight, the flowers bloomed.
"How beautiful!" she whispered.
"Like you in the moonlight."
Chapter Seven
That night, among jasmine scent.
"Your body is fragrant like a garden."
"And you are a skilled gardener."
Chapter Eight
She finished her research on night flowers.
"The most beautiful flower I found was you."
"And you are my rose that won't wilt."
Conclusion
Flowers bloom and wilt.
But our love blooms every night.
In the midnight garden.
