Kingston Calling
"Radio host Simone broadcasts across Jamaica from her Kingston studio, and when her voice reaches lonely fisherman David's boat every night, he calls in—and discovers her voice is just the beginning."
The fishing boats had one radio station. Late nights, it was always Simone's voice keeping David company.
He called in. Every night. Same voice, same request.
"Play Gregory Isaacs for mi."
She always did. Eventually she asked: "Who is mi nighttime fisherman?"
"Someone who lives for yuh voice."
"Then come see if the rest matches."
She was better than her voice. Thick and radiant in the studio light, welcoming him like a long-lost friend.
"Yuh smaller than yuh sound," she joked.
"Yuh more beautiful than yuh sound. And yuh sound gorgeous."
"Flatterer."
"Truth-teller."
He returned from each fishing trip to her station. She kept him on air longer than she should.
"The listeners will talk," she warned.
"Let them. They don't know what we have."
"What do we have?"
"Everything I been fishing for mi whole life."
"Yes! David! Right there!"
In her broadcast booth, off-air, finally showing him what her voice promised.
"Don't stop! Yuh answering all mi calls!"
Listeners noticed the change in her. Happier. Warmer. More love songs.
"Yuh in love," they said.
"Mi always been in love," she replied on air. "I just finally found who with."
David still fishes. Still listens.
But now he comes home to Simone.
Her voice in his ear.
Her body in his arms.
Kingston calling.
Connection answered.
Forever broadcasting love.
