The Bookbinder of Fez
Chapter One
I have bound books in Fez for forty years.
A rare book collector came looking for a binder.
"I have an old manuscript that needs restoration."
Chapter Two
She was in her fifties, educated, book-loving.
"This manuscript is five hundred years old!"
"I will bring it back to life."
Chapter Three
She watched me work.
"Your hands treat paper like silk."
"Old books are fragile... they need gentleness."
Chapter Four
"Like hearts." She said.
I looked at her. "Yes... like hearts."
"My heart is fragile too."
Chapter Five
"Your husband?"
"He died and left me with books."
"Books are good companions... but they don't warm."
Chapter Six
I spent two weeks restoring the manuscript.
And she came every day.
"I love watching you work."
Chapter Seven
That night, in the workshop among books.
"You are the most beautiful page I've read."
"And you are the most beautiful story I've lived."
Chapter Eight
I returned the manuscript to her.
"This is a work of art!"
"And you are my masterpiece."
Conclusion
Books preserve words.
And our hearts preserve love.
Page by page, we wrote our story.
