The Lesson of the Sound Feminine Plural

الفصل الأول | Chapter One

دَخَلْتُ قَصْرَ البَاشَا لِأُعَلِّمَ بَنَاتِهِ.

I entered the pasha's palace to teach his daughters.

كُنَّ خَمْسَ مُسْلِمَاتٍ جَمِيلَاتٍ، أَجْسَادُهُنَّ مُمْتَلِئَةٌ وَعُيُونُهُنَّ وَاسِعَةٌ.

They were five beautiful Muslim women, their bodies full and their eyes wide.

"أَهْلًا بِالمُعَلِّمِ،" قُلْنَ بِأَصْوَاتٍ نَاعِمَةٍ.

"Welcome, teacher," they said with soft voices.

جَمْعُ المُؤَنَّثِ السَّالِمُ (jam' al-mu'annath al-sālim) - Sound Feminine Plural

This plural is formed by adding ـَات to feminine nouns:

مُسْلِمَاتٌ (muslimāt) - Muslim women
جَمِيلَاتٌ (jamīlāt) - beautiful ones (f.)

Formation: Replace ة with ـَات

مُسْلِمَة → مُسْلِمَات
طَالِبَة → طَالِبَات

"اليَوْمَ سَنَدْرُسُ جَمْعَ المُؤَنَّثِ السَّالِمَ،" قُلْتُ.

"Today we will study the sound feminine plural," I said.

قَالَتْ إِحْدَاهُنَّ: "نَحْنُ طَالِبَاتٌ مُجْتَهِدَاتٌ."

One of them said: "We are diligent students."

"مُمْتَازٌ! 'طَالِبَاتٌ' وَ'مُجْتَهِدَاتٌ' كِلَاهُمَا جَمْعُ مُؤَنَّثٍ سَالِمٌ."

"Excellent! Both 'students' and 'diligent' are sound feminine plurals."

"وَكَيْفَ نُعْرِبُهُ؟" سَأَلَتْ أُخْرَى.

"And how do we parse it?" asked another.

"يُرْفَعُ بِالضَّمَّةِ وَيُنْصَبُ وَيُجَرُّ بِالكَسْرَةِ."

"It is made nominative with ḍamma and accusative/genitive with kasra."

"هَذَا غَرِيبٌ! النَّصْبُ بِالكَسْرَةِ؟"

"This is strange! Accusative with kasra?"

Special: Accusative uses كسرة (not فتحة) - this is unique!

الفصل الرابع | Chapter Four

اِقْتَرَبَتْ إِحْدَاهُنَّ مِنِّي. "رَأَيْتُ المُعَلِّمَاتِ السَّابِقَاتِ..."

One of them approached me. "I saw the previous teachers..."

"أَحْسَنْتِ! 'المُعَلِّمَاتِ' مَنْصُوبَةٌ بِالكَسْرَةِ لِأَنَّهَا مَفْعُولٌ بِهِ."

"Excellent! 'The teachers' is accusative with kasra because it's a direct object."

"وَ'السَّابِقَاتِ' صِفَةٌ تَتْبَعُهَا..."

"And 'the previous' is an adjective that follows it..."

جَلَسْنَ حَوْلِي فِي دَائِرَةٍ. شَعَرْتُ بِعُطُورِهِنَّ.

They sat around me in a circle. I felt their perfumes.

"مَا الكَلِمَاتُ الَّتِي تُجْمَعُ هَكَذَا؟" سَأَلَتْ وَاحِدَةٌ.

"What words are pluralized like this?" one asked.

"الأَسْمَاءُ المُؤَنَّثَةُ، وَالمَصَادِرُ، وَبَعْضُ الأَسْمَاءِ الأَعْجَمِيَّةِ..."

"Feminine nouns, verbal nouns, and some foreign words..."

One touched my hand. "O teacher, we the students want more."

"المَزِيدَ مِنَ النَّحْوِ؟"

"More grammar?"

ضَحِكْنَ جَمِيعًا. "المَزِيدَ مِنْكَ أَنْتَ..."

They all laughed. "More of you..."

نون النسوة (nūn al-niswa) indicates feminine plural subject.

الفصل السابع | Chapter Seven

"سَنَبْقَى مَعَكَ اللَّيْلَةَ،" قُلْنَ.

"We will stay with you tonight," they said.

"وَسَتُعَلِّمُنَا دُرُوسًا أُخْرَى..."

"And you will teach us other lessons..."

تَعَلَّمْتُ أَنَّ الجُمُوعَ المُؤَنَّثَةَ قَدْ تَكُونُ أَخْطَرَ مِنَ المُفْرَدِ.

I learned that feminine plurals may be more dangerous than the singular.

In the pasha's palace, I learned that the "sound" feminine plural is not always safe.

وَأَنَّ خَمْسَ نِسَاءٍ أَقْوَى مِنْ رَجُلٍ وَاحِدٍ.

And that five women are stronger than one man.

وَبَقِيتُ مَعَهُنَّ حَتَّى طَلَعَ الفَجْرُ.

And I stayed with them until dawn rose.
