The Lesson of Demonstrative Pronouns

الفصل الأول | Chapter One

كَانَتِ الشَّاعِرَةُ عَمْيَاءَ، لَكِنَّهَا تَرَى بِقَلْبِهَا.

The poetess was blind, but she saw with her heart.

"اِجْلِسْ بِجَانِبِي،" قَالَتْ. "سَأُعَلِّمُكَ أَسْمَاءَ الإِشَارَةِ."

"Sit beside me," she said. "I will teach you demonstrative pronouns."

جَلَسْتُ. كَانَتْ فِي الأَرْبَعِينَ، جَسَدُهَا مُمْتَلِئٌ وَيَدَاهَا نَاعِمَتَانِ.

I sat. She was in her forties, her body full and her hands soft.

أَسْمَاءُ الإِشَارَةِ (asmā' al-ishāra) - Demonstrative Pronouns

These words point to something:

هَذَا (hādhā) - this (masculine singular)
هَذِهِ (hādhihi) - this (feminine singular)
ذَلِكَ (dhālika) - that (masculine singular)
تِلْكَ (tilka) - that (feminine singular)

"This" = close, "That" = far

الفصل الثاني | Chapter Two

مَدَّتْ يَدَهَا وَلَمَسَتْ وَجْهِي. "هَذَا وَجْهُكَ."

She extended her hand and touched my face. "This is your face."

"هَذِهِ عَيْنَاكَ... هَذَا أَنْفُكَ... هَذِهِ شَفَتَاكَ..."

"These are your eyes... this is your nose... these are your lips..."

"'هَذَا' لِلمُذَكَّرِ وَ'هَذِهِ' لِلمُؤَنَّثِ..."

"'Hādhā' is for masculine and 'hādhihi' is for feminine..."

Note: هَؤُلَاءِ is used for both genders in plural (for people).

الفصل الثالث | Chapter Three

أَخَذَتْ يَدِي وَوَضَعَتْهَا عَلَى وَجْهِهَا.

She took my hand and placed it on her face.

"وَهَذَا وَجْهِي... هَلْ تَشْعُرُ بِهِ؟"

"And this is my face... do you feel it?"

"نَعَمْ... هَذِهِ بَشَرَتُكِ نَاعِمَةٌ..."

"Yes... this skin of yours is soft..."

هَذَا وَجْهِي:

هَذَا: اسم إشارة مبني في محل رفع مبتدأ
وَجْهِي: خبر مرفوع، وياء المتكلم مضاف إليه

أسماء الإشارة مبنية (لا تتغير) لكنها تأخذ مواقع إعرابية:

في محل رفع (مبتدأ، فاعل)
في محل نصب (مفعول به)
في محل جر (بعد حرف جر)

الفصل الرابع | Chapter Four

"وَمَاذَا عَنِ البَعِيدِ؟" سَأَلْتُهَا.

"And what about the far?" I asked her.

"ذَلِكَ لِلبَعِيدِ المُذَكَّرِ، وَتِلْكَ لِلبَعِيدِ المُؤَنَّثِ."

"Dhālika is for far masculine, and tilka for far feminine."

"ذَلِكَ البَابُ بَعِيدٌ... لَكِنَّكِ أَنْتِ قَرِيبَةٌ."

"That door is far... but you are close."

The كَ at the end is called "كاف الخطاب" (kāf of address).

الفصل الخامس | Chapter Five

حَرَّكَتْ يَدِي إِلَى صَدْرِهَا. "وَهَذَا... مَا هَذَا؟"

She moved my hand to her chest. "And this... what is this?"

اِرْتَجَفَتْ يَدِي. "هَذَا... هَذَا قَلْبُكِ يَنْبِضُ..."

My hand trembled. "This is... this is your heart beating..."

"أَحْسَنْتَ. هَذَا قَلْبِي. وَهَذِهِ نَبَضَاتُهُ."

"Well done. This is my heart. And these are its beats."

اسم الإشارة مع أل - Demonstrative with ال

When pointing to a definite noun:

هَذَا + ال + اسم: هَذَا الكِتَابُ (this book)
The noun after the demonstrative takes ال

هَذَا القَلْبُ = this heart (definite) هَذَا قَلْبٌ = this is a heart (indefinite predicate)

الفصل السادس | Chapter Six

"عَلِّمْنِي بِاللَّمْسِ،" هَمَسَتْ. "فَأَنَا لَا أَرَى."

"Teach me through touch," she whispered. "For I cannot see."

"هَذِهِ يَدِي... وَهَذِهِ يَدُكِ... وَهَاتَانِ يَدَانَا مَعًا."

"This is my hand... and this is your hand... and these two are our hands together."

"هَاتَانِ... جَمِيلَةٌ هَذِهِ الصِّيغَةُ."

"These two... beautiful is this form."

الفصل السابع | Chapter Seven

"وَتِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةُ... هَلْ سَتَنْسَاهَا؟" سَأَلَتْنِي.

"And that night... will you forget it?" she asked me.

"لَنْ أَنْسَى هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةَ أَبَدًا."

"I will never forget this night."

وَتَعَلَّمْتُ أَنَّ الإِشَارَةَ لَيْسَتْ بِالعُيُونِ فَقَطْ، بَلْ بِالقَلْبِ أَيْضًا.

And I learned that pointing is not only with the eyes, but with the heart too.
