The Lesson of Adjective Agreement

الفصل الأول | Chapter One

"صِفِينِي!" قَالَتْ بِنْتُ التَّاجِرِ وَهِيَ تَجْلِسُ أَمَامِي.

"Describe me!" said the merchant's daughter as she sat before me.

كَانَتِ امْرَأَةً جَمِيلَةً. جَسَدُهَا مُمْتَلِئٌ وَشَعْرُهَا أَسْوَدُ طَوِيلٌ.

She was a beautiful woman. Her body was full and her hair black and long.

"أَنْتِ امْرَأَةٌ جَمِيلَةٌ..." بَدَأْتُ.

"You are a beautiful woman..." I began.

النَّعْتُ وَالمَنْعُوتُ (al-na't wa-l-man'ūt) - The Adjective and What It Describes

The adjective (النعت) must agree with the noun it describes (المنعوت) in four things:

الإعراب (Case)
التعريف والتنكير (Definiteness)
الجنس (Gender)
العدد (Number)

Example: امْرَأَةٌ جَمِيلَةٌ (a beautiful woman)

Both are مؤنث (feminine)
Both are نكرة (indefinite)
Both are مرفوع (nominative)
Both are مفرد (singular)

الفصل الثاني | Chapter Two

"لِمَاذَا قُلْتَ 'جَمِيلَةٌ' وَلَمْ تَقُلْ 'جَمِيلٌ'؟" سَأَلَتْ.

"Why did you say 'jamīla' and not 'jamīl'?" she asked.

"لِأَنَّ النَّعْتَ يَتْبَعُ المَنْعُوتَ. أَنْتِ مُؤَنَّثَةٌ، فَالصِّفَةُ مُؤَنَّثَةٌ."

"Because the adjective follows what it describes. You are feminine, so the adjective is feminine."

"وَإِذَا وَصَفْتُ عَيْنَيَّ؟"

"And if you describe my eyes?"

نَظَرْتُ إِلَى عَيْنَيْهَا الوَاسِعَتَيْنِ السَّوْدَاوَيْنِ.

I looked at her wide, black eyes.

"عَيْنَاكِ وَاسِعَتَانِ سَوْدَاوَانِ... هُنَا النَّعْتُ مُثَنَّى لِأَنَّ المَنْعُوتَ مُثَنَّى."

"Your eyes are wide and black... here the adjective is dual because the described noun is dual."

اِقْتَرَبَتْ مِنِّي. "وَشَفَتَايَ؟"

She approached me. "And my lips?"

*For non-human plurals, the adjective is typically feminine singular!

الفصل الرابع | Chapter Four

"شَفَتَاكِ حَمْرَاوَانِ نَاعِمَتَانِ..." قُلْتُ بِصَوْتٍ خَافِتٍ.

"Your lips are red and soft..." I said in a low voice.

"لِمَاذَا 'حَمْرَاوَانِ' وَلَيْسَ 'أَحْمَرَانِ'؟"

"Why 'ḥamrāwān' and not 'aḥmarān'?"

"لِأَنَّ صِيغَةَ 'أَفْعَل' لِلأَلْوَانِ تُؤَنَّثُ عَلَى 'فَعْلَاء'. أَحْمَرُ → حَمْرَاءُ."

"Because the 'af'al' form for colors is feminized as 'fa'lā''. Aḥmar → ḥamrā'."

Colors and physical qualities follow a special pattern:

الفصل الخامس | Chapter Five

"وَالجَسَدُ المُمْتَلِئُ... كَيْفَ أَصِفُهُ؟"

"And the full body... how do I describe it?"

وَقَفَتْ أَمَامِي. "هَكَذَا تَصِفُ: جَسَدٌ مُمْتَلِئٌ جَمِيلٌ."

She stood before me. "This is how you describe: a full, beautiful body."

"وَإِذَا أَرَدْتُ التَّعْرِيفَ؟"

"And if I want to make it definite?"

"الجَسَدُ المُمْتَلِئُ الجَمِيلُ."

"The full, beautiful body."

التطابق في التعريف والتنكير - Definiteness Agreement

The adjective must match the noun in definiteness:

Both noun and adjective take ال for definite.

الفصل السادس | Chapter Six

أَمْسَكَتْ يَدِي وَوَضَعَتْهَا عَلَى خَصْرِهَا.

She held my hand and placed it on her waist.

"صِفْ مَا تَلْمِسُهُ!"

"Describe what you touch!"

"خَصْرٌ نَاعِمٌ دَافِئٌ... بَشَرَةٌ حَرِيرِيَّةٌ بَيْضَاءُ..."

"A soft, warm waist... silky, white skin..."

تعدد النعوت - Multiple Adjectives

A noun can have multiple adjectives, all following the same agreement rules:

خَصْرٌ نَاعِمٌ دَافِئٌ (a soft, warm waist):

خَصْرٌ: مذكر، نكرة، مرفوع
نَاعِمٌ: مذكر، نكرة، مرفوع ✓
دَافِئٌ: مذكر، نكرة، مرفوع ✓

All adjectives must agree with the noun they describe.

الفصل السابع | Chapter Seven

"وَالآنَ، صِفْ لِي اللَّيْلَةَ الَّتِي سَنَقْضِيهَا مَعًا..."

"And now, describe for me the night we shall spend together..."

"لَيْلَةٌ طَوِيلَةٌ حَارَّةٌ مُثِيرَةٌ..."

"A long, hot, exciting night..."

اِبْتَسَمَتْ. "أَحْسَنْتَ! النُّعُوتُ كُلُّهَا مُطَابِقَةٌ!"

She smiled. "Excellent! All the adjectives agree!"

إعراب النعت - Parsing the Adjective

لَيْلَةٌ طَوِيلَةٌ حَارَّةٌ:

لَيْلَةٌ: خبر مرفوع بالضمة (أو مبتدأ مؤخر)
طَوِيلَةٌ: نعت مرفوع بالضمة
حَارَّةٌ: نعت ثانٍ مرفوع بالضمة

كل النعوت تتبع المنعوت في إعرابه.

الخاتمة | Conclusion

فِي تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةِ، تَعَلَّمْتُ أَنَّ الوَصْفَ لَيْسَ فَقَطْ كَلِمَاتٍ.

On that night, I learned that description is not only words.

بَلْ هُوَ فَنٌّ يَجْمَعُ اللُّغَةَ وَالإِحْسَاسَ.

Rather, it is an art that combines language and feeling.

وَكَمَا يَتْبَعُ النَّعْتُ المَنْعُوتَ، تَبِعْتُهَا إِلَى غُرْفَتِهَا.

And just as the adjective follows what it describes, I followed her to her room.
