The Lesson of the Possessive Construction

الفصل الأول | Chapter One

دَخَلْتُ مَكْتَبَةَ بَغْدَادَ بَاحِثًا عَنِ المَعْرِفَةِ. وَجَدْتُ أَمِينَةَ المَكْتَبَةِ.

I entered the library of Baghdad seeking knowledge. I found the librarian.

كَانَتِ امْرَأَةً فِي الثَّلَاثِينَ، ذَاتَ جَسَدٍ مُمْتَلِئٍ وَعَيْنَيْنِ خَضْرَاوَيْنِ.

She was a woman in her thirties, with a full body and green eyes.

"أُرِيدُ تَعَلُّمَ الإِضَافَةِ،" قُلْتُ لَهَا.

"I want to learn the possessive construction," I said to her.

الإِضَافَةُ (al-iḍāfa) - The Possessive/Genitive Construction

الإضافة connects two nouns to show possession or relationship:

مَكْتَبَةُ بَغْدَادَ (the library of Baghdad)
First noun: مُضَاف (possessed) - loses tanwin and ال
Second noun: مُضَاف إِلَيْهِ (possessor) - always مجرور (genitive)

Structure: مُضَاف + مُضَاف إليه (مجرور)

الفصل الثاني | Chapter Two

"الإِضَافَةُ رِبَاطٌ بَيْنَ كَلِمَتَيْنِ،" شَرَحَتْ. "مِثْلُ: بَابُ الغُرْفَةِ، كِتَابُ النَّحْوِ."

"The iḍāfa is a bond between two words," she explained. "Like: the door of the room, the book of grammar."

"وَكَيْفَ نُعْرِبُهَا؟"

"And how do we parse it?"

"المُضَافُ يُعْرَبُ حَسَبَ مَوْقِعِهِ، وَالمُضَافُ إِلَيْهِ دَائِمًا مَجْرُورٌ."

"The muḍāf is parsed according to its position, and the muḍāf ilayhi is always in genitive."

قواعد الإضافة - Rules of Iḍāfa

المضاف (first noun):
- يَفْقِدُ التَّنْوِينَ (loses tanwin): كِتَابٌ → كِتَابُ
- يَفْقِدُ أَلْ (loses ال): الكِتَابُ → كِتَابُ
المضاف إليه (second noun):
- دائمًا مجرور (always genitive)
- علامته: الكسرة أو ما ينوب عنها

Example: بَابُ الغُرْفَةِ

بَابُ: مضاف، مرفوع
الغُرْفَةِ: مضاف إليه، مجرور بالكسرة

الفصل الثالث | Chapter Three

قَادَتْنِي إِلَى رُكْنِ المَخْطُوطَاتِ. كَانَ المَكَانُ هَادِئًا وَمُظْلِمًا.

She led me to the corner of manuscripts. The place was quiet and dark.

"هُنَا نَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ نَدْرُسَ بِهُدُوءٍ،" قَالَتْ.

"Here we can study quietly," she said.

"رُكْنُ المَخْطُوطَاتِ... هَذِهِ إِضَافَةٌ أَيْضًا؟"

"The corner of manuscripts... this is also an iḍāfa?"

الإضافة اللفظية والمعنوية - Types of Iḍāfa

إضافة معنوية (semantic) - shows possession or specification:

رُكْنُ المَخْطُوطَاتِ (the corner of manuscripts)
بَيْتُ الرَّجُلِ (the man's house)

إضافة لفظية (formal) - adjective + noun:

جَمِيلُ الوَجْهِ (beautiful of face = beautiful-faced)
كَبِيرُ القَلْبِ (big of heart = generous)

الفصل الرابع | Chapter Four

جَلَسْنَا بِجَانِبِ بَعْضٍ. شَعَرْتُ بِدِفْءِ جَسَدِهَا.

We sat beside each other. I felt the warmth of her body.

"'دِفْءُ جَسَدِهَا'... هَلْ هَذِهِ إِضَافَةٌ مُتَسَلْسِلَةٌ؟"

"'The warmth of her body'... is this a chained iḍāfa?"

"نَعَمْ! دِفْءُ مُضَافٌ إِلَى جَسَدِ، وَجَسَدُ مُضَافٌ إِلَى الضَّمِيرِ."

"Yes! Warmth is possessed by body, and body is possessed by the pronoun."

الإضافة المتسلسلة - Chained Iḍāfa

Multiple iḍāfas can chain together:

دِفْءُ جَسَدِهَا (the warmth of her body):

دِفْءُ: مضاف أول
جَسَدِ: مضاف إليه + مضاف ثانٍ
ها: مضاف إليه (ضمير متصل في محل جر)

Another example: بَابُ بَيْتِ الرَّجُلِ (the door of the man's house)

"وَمَاذَا عَنْ إِضَافَةِ الضَّمَائِرِ؟" سَأَلْتُهَا وَأَنَا أَقْتَرِبُ مِنْهَا.

"And what about possessive pronouns?" I asked her while approaching.

"الضَّمِيرُ يُضَافُ إِلَيْهِ مُبَاشَرَةً: كِتَابِي، كِتَابُكَ، كِتَابُهَا..."

"The pronoun is directly possessed: my book, your book, her book..."

لَمَسْتُ يَدَهَا. "يَدُكِ نَاعِمَةٌ..."

I touched her hand. "Your hand is soft..."

الفصل السادس | Chapter Six

"قَلْبِي يَنْبِضُ بِسُرْعَةٍ..." هَمَسْتُ.

"My heart beats fast..." I whispered.

"'قَلْبِي' إِضَافَةٌ. القَلْبُ مُضَافٌ وَالياءُ مُضَافٌ إِلَيْهِ."

"'My heart' is an iḍāfa. Heart is the muḍāf and the yā' is the muḍāf ilayhi."

"وَشَفَتَاكِ قَرِيبَتَانِ مِنْ شَفَتَيَّ..."

"And your lips are close to my lips..."

المثنى في الإضافة - Dual in Iḍāfa

When a dual noun is muḍāf, it loses the نون:

شَفَتَانِ (two lips) → شَفَتَا (المضاف)
شَفَتَاكِ = شَفَتَا + كِ (your two lips)

Similarly with sound masculine plural:

مُعَلِّمُونَ (teachers) → مُعَلِّمُو (المضاف)
مُعَلِّمُو المَدْرَسَةِ (the school's teachers)

الفصل السابع | Chapter Seven

قَبَّلْتُهَا بَيْنَ رُفُوفِ الكُتُبِ. "سِرُّنَا آمِنٌ هُنَا..."

I kissed her among the bookshelves. "Our secret is safe here..."

"'سِرُّنَا'... إِضَافَةٌ أُخْرَى." اِبْتَسَمَتْ.

"'Our secret'... another iḍāfa." She smiled.

وَتَعَلَّمْتُ أَنَّ أَجْمَلَ الإِضَافَاتِ مَا يَجْمَعُ قَلْبَيْنِ.

And I learned that the most beautiful possessions are what joins two hearts.

إعراب الإضافة الكامل - Full Parsing of Iḍāfa

سِرُّنَا آمِنٌ:

سِرُّ: مبتدأ مرفوع بالضمة، وهو مضاف
نَا: ضمير متصل في محل جر مضاف إليه
آمِنٌ: خبر مرفوع بالضمة

بَيْنَ رُفُوفِ الكُتُبِ:

بَيْنَ: ظرف مكان منصوب
رُفُوفِ: مضاف إليه مجرور، وهو مضاف
الكُتُبِ: مضاف إليه مجرور بالكسرة

الخاتمة | Conclusion

فِي مَكْتَبَةِ بَغْدَادَ، تَعَلَّمْتُ أَنَّ الإِضَافَةَ أَكْثَرُ مِنْ قَاعِدَةٍ نَحْوِيَّةٍ.

In the library of Baghdad, I learned that the iḍāfa is more than a grammatical rule.

إِنَّهَا رِبَاطٌ يَجْعَلُ شَيْئَيْنِ شَيْئًا وَاحِدًا.

It is a bond that makes two things one thing.

كَمَا صِرْنَا نَحْنُ شَيْئًا وَاحِدًا تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةَ.

Just as we became one thing that night.
