The Lesson of Attached Pronouns

الفصل الأول | Chapter One

طَلَبَتْنِي إِلَى غُرْفَتِهَا. أَغْلَقَتِ البَابَ وَرَاءَنَا.

She summoned me to her room. She closed the door behind us.

"عَلِّمْنِي الضَّمَائِرَ المُتَّصِلَةَ،" قَالَتْ زَوْجَةُ سَيِّدِي.

"Teach me the attached pronouns," said my master's wife.

كَانَتْ فِي الأَرْبَعِينَ، جَسَدُهَا مُمْتَلِئٌ وَعَيْنَاهَا مَاكِرَتَانِ.

She was in her forties, her body full and her eyes cunning.

الضَّمَائِرُ المُتَّصِلَةُ (al-ḍamā'ir al-muttaṣila) - Attached Pronouns

These pronouns attach to verbs, nouns, and prepositions:

In the text:

طَلَبَتْنِي (she summoned me) - attached to verb
غُرْفَتِهَا (her room) - attached to noun
وَرَاءَنَا (behind us) - attached to preposition

They never stand alone and must connect to another word.

الفصل الثاني | Chapter Two

"الضَّمَائِرُ المُتَّصِلَةُ ثَلَاثَةُ أَنْوَاعٍ،" بَدَأْتُ. "مَا يَتَّصِلُ بِالأَفْعَالِ، وَمَا يَتَّصِلُ بِالأَسْمَاءِ، وَمَا يَتَّصِلُ بِالحُرُوفِ."

"Attached pronouns are three types," I began. "Those that connect to verbs, those to nouns, and those to particles."

"أَعْطِنِي أَمْثِلَةً عَلَى جَسَدِي..." اِبْتَسَمَتْ.

"Give me examples on my body..." she smiled.

اِبْتَلَعْتُ رِيقِي. "جَسَدُكِ... 'الكَافُ' ضَمِيرٌ مُتَّصِلٌ."

I swallowed my saliva. "Your body... 'the kāf' is an attached pronoun."

ضمائر الرفع المتصلة - Nominative Attached Pronouns

These attach to verbs as subjects:

الفصل الثالث | Chapter Three

"وَمَاذَا عَنِ الضَّمَائِرِ الَّتِي تَدُلُّ عَلَى المَفْعُولِ بِهِ؟" سَأَلَتْ.

"And what about the pronouns that indicate the direct object?" she asked.

"مِثْلُ: رَأَيْتُكِ، لَمَسْتُكِ، أَحْبَبْتُكِ..."

"Like: I saw you, I touched you, I loved you..."

"قُلْهَا مَرَّةً أُخْرَى..." هَمَسَتْ.

"Say it again..." she whispered.

ضمائر النصب والجر المتصلة - Accusative/Genitive Pronouns

These are the same set, used for objects and after prepositions:

الفصل الرابع | Chapter Four

اِقْتَرَبَتْ مِنِّي. "أَرِنِي كَيْفَ يَتَّصِلُ الضَّمِيرُ بِالفِعْلِ."

She approached me. "Show me how the pronoun attaches to the verb."

"لَمَسْتُ" - هَذَا مَاضٍ مَعَ 'أَنَا'. "لَمَسْتُكِ" - أَضَفْتُ 'كِ' لِلمَفْعُولِ بِهِ."

"Lamastu" - this is past with 'I'. "Lamastuki" - I added 'ki' for the object."

مَدَّتْ يَدَهَا إِلَى صَدْرِي. "وَإِذَا قُلْتُ: لَمَسْتُكَ؟"

She extended her hand to my chest. "And if I say: Lamastuka?"

التفريق بين ضمائر الرفع والنصب - Distinguishing Subject/Object Pronouns

With the verb "لَمَسَ" (to touch):

الفصل الخامس | Chapter Five

"وَمَاذَا عَنِ الضَّمَائِرِ مَعَ الأَسْمَاءِ؟" سَأَلَتْ وَيَدُهَا تَتَحَرَّكُ.

"And what about pronouns with nouns?" she asked while her hand moved.

"شَعْرُكِ، عَيْنَاكِ، شَفَتَاكِ، صَدْرُكِ..."

"Your hair, your eyes, your lips, your chest..."

"اِسْتَمِرَّ..." هَمَسَتْ.

"Continue..." she whispered.

الضمير المتصل بالاسم - Pronoun Attached to Noun

The pronoun functions as مضاف إليه (possessor):

Note: The noun (مضاف) loses its tanwin when a pronoun attaches.

الفصل السادس | Chapter Six

"عَلِّمْنِي الفَرْقَ بَيْنَ 'ـي' وَ'ـنِي'..." قَالَتْ.

"Teach me the difference between '-ī' and '-nī'..." she said.

"'ـي' تَتَّصِلُ بِالأَسْمَاءِ وَالحُرُوفِ: كِتَابِي، إِلَيَّ."

"'-ī' attaches to nouns and particles: my book, to me."

"'ـنِي' تَتَّصِلُ بِالأَفْعَالِ: أَحْبِبْنِي، الْمِسْنِي..."

"'-nī' attaches to verbs: love me, touch me..."

نون الوقاية - The Protective Nūn

When ياء المتكلم (my/me) attaches to a verb, a نون is added:

أَحَبَّنِي (he loved me) - not أَحَبَّيْ
عَلَّمَنِي (he taught me) - not عَلَّمَيْ

This نون is called "نون الوقاية" (protective nūn) because it protects the verb from ending in ي.

Exception: with أمر (imperative): أَعْطِنِي (give me)

الفصل السابع | Chapter Seven

"سَيِّدِي لَا يَعْرِفُ شَيْئًا عَنَّا..." هَمَسَتْ.

"My master knows nothing about us..." she whispered.

"'عَنَّا' - عَنْ + نَا. الضَّمِيرُ مُتَّصِلٌ بِحَرْفِ الجَرِّ."

"'Annā' - 'an + nā. The pronoun attaches to the preposition."

"وَ'بَيْنَنَا' سِرٌّ لَنَا وَحْدَنَا."

"And 'between us' is a secret for us alone."

الخاتمة | Conclusion

فِي تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةِ، تَعَلَّمْتُ أَنَّ الضَّمَائِرَ تَرْبِطُنَا بِغَيْرِنَا.

On that night, I learned that pronouns connect us to others.

هِيَ... أَنَا... نَحْنُ... كُلُّهَا ضَمَائِرُ تَحْكِي قِصَّتَنَا.

She... I... we... all are pronouns that tell our story.

وَبَقِيَ سِرُّنَا بَيْنَنَا حَتَّى اليَوْمِ.

And our secret remained between us until today.
