الفصل الأول | Chapter One
تَقَاعَدْتُ مِنَ البَحْرِ قَبْلَ خَمْسِ سَنَوَاتٍ.
I retired from the sea five years ago.
الآنَ أَجْلِسُ فِي مِينَاءِ الدَّارِ البَيْضَاءِ كُلَّ مَسَاءٍ.
Now I sit at Casablanca port every evening.
أُرَاقِبُ السُّفُنَ وَالنَّاسَ.
Watching ships and people.
الفصل الثاني | Chapter Two
رَأَيْتُهَا تَمْشِي عَلَى الرَّصِيفِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ.
I saw her walking on the pier every day.
امْرَأَةٌ فِي الخَمْسِينَ، وَحِيدَةٌ، حَزِينَةٌ.
A woman in her fifties, alone, sad.
"السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ،" قُلْتُ يَوْمًا.
"Peace be upon you," I said one day.
الفصل الثالث | Chapter Three
"وَعَلَيْكُمُ السَّلَامُ."
"And upon you peace."
"لِمَاذَا تَمْشِينَ هُنَا كُلَّ يَوْمٍ؟"
"Why do you walk here every day?"
"زَوْجِي كَانَ بَحَّارًا... مَاتَ فِي البَحْرِ."
"My husband was a sailor... he died at sea."
الفصل الرابع | Chapter Four
"أَنَا قُبْطَانٌ مُتَقَاعِدٌ... أَفْهَمُ البَحْرَ."
"I am a retired captain... I understand the sea."
"البَحْرُ قَاسٍ وَجَمِيلٌ."
"The sea is cruel and beautiful."
"مِثْلُ الحَيَاةِ."
"Like life."
الفصل الخامس | Chapter Five
صِرْنَا نَمْشِي مَعًا كُلَّ مَسَاءٍ.
We started walking together every evening.
أَحْكِي لَهَا قِصَصَ البَحْرِ.
I tell her stories of the sea.
"قَصَصُكَ تُخَفِّفُ حُزْنِي."
"Your stories ease my sadness."
الفصل السادس | Chapter Six
"هَلْ أَنْتَ وَحِيدٌ أَيْضًا؟"
"Are you also alone?"
"زَوْجَتِي لَمْ تَحْتَمِلِ البَحْرَ... تَرَكَتْنِي."
"My wife couldn't bear the sea... she left me."
"البَحْرُ يَأْخُذُ وَيُعْطِي."
"The sea takes and gives."
الفصل السابع | Chapter Seven
ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ، عَلَى قَارِبِي الصَّغِيرِ.
One night, on my small boat.
تَحْتَ نُجُومِ الدَّارِ البَيْضَاءِ.
Under the stars of Casablanca.
"البَحْرُ أَعْطَانِي إِيَّاكِ."
"The sea gave me you."
الفصل الثامن | Chapter Eight
الآنَ نَمْشِي مَعًا كُلَّ مَسَاءٍ.
Now we walk together every evening.
لَيْسَ حُزْنًا، بَلْ فَرَحًا.
Not in sadness, but in joy.
قُبْطَانٌ وَأَرْمَلَةُ بَحَّارٍ، جَمَعَهُمَا البَحْرُ.
A captain and a sailor's widow, brought together by the sea.
الخاتمة | Conclusion
المِينَاءُ مَكَانُ الوَدَاعِ وَالِّلقَاءِ.
The port is a place of farewell and meeting.
وَنَحْنُ الْتَقَيْنَا فِيهِ.
And we met in it.
حُبٌّ جَاءَ عَلَى أَمْوَاجِ القَدَرِ.
A love that came on the waves of destiny.
