Avi died suddenly. Heart attack at fifty-two. Bracha was alone.
"אני הייתי החברותא של בעלך," said the man at shiva. "I was your husband's study partner."

"?באמת?" "Really?"
"אמר שאתה הכי חכם שהוא מכיר." "Said you were the smartest person he knew."

Months later. She couldn't learn alone.
"?את רוצה שנלמד ביחד?" Aryeh offered. "Do you want us to study together?"
"!אני אישה!" "I'm a woman!"
"?ואז?" "So?"
"!זה לא נעשה!" "It's not done!"
"דברים משתנים." "Things change."

They studied. Gemara, Mishna. Conversation.

They married. The community whispered.
