The Lease Agreement

by Anastasia Chrome|2 min read|
"When Imran's building gets new ownership, his new landlady Anisa arrives demanding assessments. Their class tension becomes something much more personal."

The Lease Agreement

"Rent's increasing by twenty percent."

Imran blocked his doorway. "And you're who, exactly?"

"Anisa Hussain. My father bought this building." She didn't flinch. "I'm assessing tenants."

"Looking for eviction excuses?"

"Looking to understand the property." Her eyes flashed. "Not all landlords are monsters."

"Prove it."

She did.

Over the following weeks, Anisa fixed everything—pipes, wiring, issues the previous owner ignored. She worked alongside contractors, got her hands dirty, treated tenants like people.

"You're different than I expected," Imran admitted.

"So are you." She accepted his chai. "Most tenants see the building. You see the community."

"Someone has to care."

"That's rare." Her voice softened. "I can't stop thinking about you. Your passion. The way you fight."

"This is complicated."

"The best things are."

They made love in his tiny flat—the one she technically owned.

"So inappropriate," Anisa gasped.

"Extremely." He kissed her neck. "Don't stop."

She didn't.

When he entered her, the power dynamic dissolved into pure connection.

"Meri jaan," he breathed. "You complicate everything."

"Worth it." She pulled him closer. "Make me forget I'm your landlord."

"My father won't approve," she said afterward.

"I don't need his approval. Just yours." He tilted her chin up. "Marry me. Make this home ours."

"We just started—"

"We started when you demanded rent increases." He smiled. "Been falling since."

The wedding was in the courtyard. Tenants attended.

Rent stayed frozen.

Best investment ever made.
