The kitchen renovation was supposed to take two weeks.
"אני אורי," said the young contractor. "I'm Uri."
Sigal looked at him. Twenty-eight. Muscled. Confident.
"אני... אני סיגל. הבעל שלי בעבודה." "I'm... I'm Sigal. My husband is at work."
"אני יודע. הוא הזמין אותי." "I know. He ordered me."
פרק שני | Chapter Two
Days of hammering. Drilling. And watching.
"?את רוצה לראות איך עושים אריחים?" "Do you want to see how tiles are done?"
"אני... כן, למה לא." "I... yes, why not."
His hands were skilled. She imagined them elsewhere.
פרק שלישי | Chapter Three
"הבעל שלך לא בבית הרבה, נכון?" "Your husband isn't home much, right?"
"הוא עובד קשה." "He works hard."

"אני... אני מחכה." "I... I wait."
"?למה לחכות?" "Why wait?"
פרק רביעי | Chapter Four
The new counter. Strong. Solid.
"!אורי... מישהו יכול להיכנס!" "Uri... someone could come in!"
"הדלת נעולה." "The door is locked."
"!אבל אני נשואה" "But I'm married!"
"אני לא שואל אותך להתגרש. אני שואל אותך לחיות." "I'm not asking you to divorce. I'm asking you to live."
פרק חמישי | Chapter Five
The renovation finished. He left.
"?את מרוצה מהמטבח?" her husband asked. "Are you satisfied with the kitchen?"
"כן. מאוד." "Yes. Very."
"טוב. היית נראית עצובה לאחרונה." "Good. You looked sad lately."
"עכשיו אני יותר טוב." "Now I'm better."
She never saw Uri again. But every time she cooked on that counter, she remembered.
