The King's Riddle

Chapter One: The Impossible Challenge

The Imam in Nizwa announced: "Whoever solves my riddle, I shall wed him to my daughter and give him half my kingdom!"

The riddle was: "What does the poor own and the rich lose, if you eat it you die, and if you don't eat it you also die?"

Scholars and sages came from everywhere. They tried and failed.

Chapter Two: The Bold Girl

A poor girl called Hassa heard about the riddle. She was clever but had never entered a school.

She went to the palace. The guards laughed: "A poor girl? What do you know?"

But the Imam allowed her in. He said: "Wisdom knows neither rich nor poor."

Chapter Three: The Simple Answer

Hassa stood before the Imam and sages. She said confidently: "The answer is... nothing!"

Everyone fell silent. Then she said: "The poor owns nothing, the rich needs nothing. If you eat nothing, you die of hunger. And if you don't eat nothing, meaning you eat something, you live... but we all die in the end!"

The Imam smiled: "Correct!"

Chapter Four: The Happy Ending

Hassa said: "I do not want half your kingdom, O my lord. And I cannot marry your daughter! I am a girl!"

Everyone laughed. The Imam said: "Then what do you want?"

She said: "I want to learn. Build me a school for girls."

The Imam agreed, and Hassa became the first teacher for girls in Nizwa.
