The Forbidden Love of Rustaq
الفصلُ الأَوَّلُ: العائِلَتانِ المُتَعادِيَتانِ
Chapter One: The Feuding Families
فِي مَدِينَةِ الرُّسْتاقِ، تَحْتَ ظِلِّ قَلْعَتِها الشَّامِخَةِ، عاشَتْ عائِلَتانِ مُتَحارِبَتانِ مُنْذُ أَجْيالٍ: بَنُو هِلالٍ وَبَنُو عامِرٍ. كانَتِ العَداوَةُ بَيْنَهُما قَدِيمَةً، لا يَذْكُرُ أَحَدٌ سَبَبَها.
In the city of Rustaq, under the shadow of its towering fortress, two families had been at war for generations: Banu Hilal and Banu Amir. The enmity between them was ancient; no one remembered its cause.
فِي دارِ بَنِي هِلالٍ، عاشَتْ فَتاةٌ تُدْعَى رَيَّا، جَمالُها يَفْتِنُ القُلُوبَ. وَفِي دارِ بَنِي عامِرٍ، عاشَ شابٌّ يُدْعَى غَسَّانُ، فارِسٌ لَهُ قَلْبُ شاعِرٍ.
In the house of Banu Hilal lived a girl called Rayya, whose beauty captivated hearts. In the house of Banu Amir lived a youth called Ghassan, a knight with a poet's heart.
الفصلُ الثَّانِي: اللِّقاءُ السِّرِّيُّ
Chapter Two: The Secret Meeting
اِلْتَقَيا بِالصُّدْفَةِ عِنْدَ عَيْنِ الكِبْرِيتِ الحارَّةِ. كانَتْ رَيَّا تَمْلَأُ جَرَّتَها، وَكانَ غَسَّانُ يَسْقِي فَرَسَهُ.
They met by chance at the hot sulfur spring. Rayya was filling her jar, and Ghassan was watering his horse.
نَظَرَ كُلٌّ مِنْهُما لِلآخَرِ، فَسَقَطَ القَلْبانِ فِي بِئْرِ الهَوَى.
Each looked at the other, and both hearts fell into the well of love.
قالَتْ رَيَّا: «أَنْتَ مِنْ بَنِي عامِرٍ... يَجِبُ أَنْ أَكْرَهَكَ.»
Rayya said: "You are from Banu Amir... I should hate you."
قالَ غَسَّانُ: «وَأَنا يَجِبُ أَنْ أَكْرَهَكِ. لَكِنْ كَيْفَ يَكْرَهُ القَلْبُ مَنْ يُحِبُّ؟»
Ghassan said: "And I should hate you. But how can the heart hate whom it loves?"
الفصلُ الثَّالِثُ: الفِرارُ وَالمُطارَدَةُ
Chapter Three: The Escape and the Chase
اِجْتَمَعا سِرًّا لِأَشْهُرٍ، حَتَّى اكْتَشَفَ أَخُو رَيَّا الأَمْرَ. جُنَّ جُنُونُهُ وَأَقْسَمَ أَنْ يَقْتُلَ غَسَّانَ.
They met secretly for months, until Rayya's brother discovered the matter. He flew into a rage and swore to kill Ghassan.
قَرَّرَ العاشِقانِ الفِرارَ. فِي لَيْلَةٍ مُظْلِمَةٍ، هَرَبا مَعًا نَحْوَ الجِبالِ.
The lovers decided to flee. On a dark night, they escaped together toward the mountains.
لَكِنَّ رِجالَ العائِلَتَيْنِ لَحِقُوا بِهِما. اِجْتَمَعَ الأَعْداءُ لِأَوَّلِ مَرَّةٍ، مُتَّحِدِينَ فِي مُطارَدَةِ الحُبِّ.
But men from both families pursued them. Enemies gathered for the first time, united in chasing love.
الفصلُ الرَّابِعُ: الفِداءُ العَظِيمُ
Chapter Four: The Great Sacrifice
وَصَلُوا إِلى حافَّةِ جَبَلٍ، وَالمُطارِدُونَ وَراءَهُمْ. لَمْ يَكُنْ هُناكَ مَفَرٌّ.
They reached the edge of a mountain, with pursuers behind them. There was no escape.
قالَ غَسَّانُ: «سَأُسَلِّمُ نَفْسِي. اِذْهَبِي أَنْتِ!»
Ghassan said: "I shall surrender myself. You go!"
قالَتْ رَيَّا: «لا! نَعِيشُ مَعًا أَوْ نَمُوتُ مَعًا!»
Rayya said: "No! We live together or die together!"
أَمْسَكا أَيْدِيَهُما وَقَفَزا مِنَ الجَبَلِ. وَحِينَ وَصَلَ الرِّجالُ، وَجَدُوهُما مُتَعانِقَيْنِ، وَجْهاهُما مُبْتَسِمانِ.
They held hands and jumped from the mountain. When the men arrived, they found them embracing, their faces smiling.
بَكَتِ العائِلَتانِ، وَأَنْهَتا العَداوَةَ إِلى الأَبَدِ. وَصارَ قَبْرُهُما مَزارًا لِلْعُشَّاقِ.
Both families wept and ended their enmity forever. Their grave became a shrine for lovers.
