The Eagle's Nest
الفصلُ الأَوَّلُ: النَّسْرُ الجَرِيحُ
Chapter One: The Wounded Eagle
كانَ حَمْدانُ راعِيًا صَغِيرًا فِي جِبالِ الحَجَرِ. ذاتَ يَوْمٍ، وَجَدَ نَسْرًا عَظِيمًا مَجْرُوحَ الجَناحِ، ساقِطًا بَيْنَ الصُّخُورِ.
Hamdan was a young shepherd in the Hajar Mountains. One day, he found a great eagle with a wounded wing, fallen among the rocks.
حَمَلَهُ إِلى كَهْفِهِ وَعالَجَ جُرْحَهُ بِالأَعْشابِ الجَبَلِيَّةِ. أَطْعَمَهُ مِنْ صَيْدِهِ وَسَقاهُ مِنْ مائِهِ.
He carried it to his cave and treated its wound with mountain herbs. He fed it from his hunt and gave it water from his supply.
مَرَّتْ أَسابِيعُ، وَالنَّسْرُ يَتَعافَى، وَحَمْدانُ يُحِبُّهُ أَكْثَرَ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ.
Weeks passed, and the eagle recovered, while Hamdan loved it more each day.
الفصلُ الثَّانِي: قَرارٌ صَعْبٌ
Chapter Two: A Difficult Decision
حِينَ شُفِيَ الجَناحُ تَمامًا، نَظَرَ النَّسْرُ إِلى السَّماءِ بِشَوْقٍ. فَهِمَ حَمْدانُ أَنَّ الطَّيْرَ يُرِيدُ الحُرِّيَّةَ.
When the wing was fully healed, the eagle looked at the sky with longing. Hamdan understood that the bird wanted freedom.
قالَ لَهُ: «أَنْتَ صَدِيقِي الوَحِيدُ فِي هَذِهِ الجِبالِ الوَحْشِيَّةِ. كَيْفَ أَتْرُكُكَ تَذْهَبُ؟»
He said to it: "You are my only friend in these wild mountains. How can I let you go?"
لَكِنَّ قَلْبَهُ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ الحُبَّ الحَقِيقِيَّ لا يَسْجُنُ مَنْ يُحِبُّ.
But his heart told him that true love does not imprison the one it loves.
الفصلُ الثَّالِثُ: الوَداعُ وَالعَطاءُ
Chapter Three: Farewell and Gift
فَتَحَ حَمْدانُ ذِراعَيْهِ وَقالَ: «اِذْهَبْ يا صَدِيقِي. السَّماءُ مَكانُكَ، لا كَهْفِي الضَّيِّقُ.»
Hamdan opened his arms and said: "Go, my friend. The sky is your place, not my narrow cave."
طارَ النَّسْرُ عالِيًا، ثُمَّ دارَ فَوْقَ حَمْدانَ ثَلاثَ مَرَّاتٍ، كَأَنَّهُ يُوَدِّعُهُ. ثُمَّ اخْتَفَى فِي الغُيُومِ.
The eagle flew high, then circled above Hamdan three times, as if bidding farewell. Then it vanished into the clouds.
مُنْذُ ذَلِكَ اليَوْمِ، كانَ النَّسْرُ يَأْتِي كُلَّ صَباحٍ وَيَتْرُكُ أَرْنَبًا أَوْ طَيْرًا عِنْدَ كَهْفِ حَمْدانَ. اسْتَمَرَّ ذَلِكَ عِشْرِينَ عامًا، حَتَّى ماتَ النَّسْرُ شَيْخًا عَجُوزًا.
From that day, the eagle would come every morning and leave a rabbit or bird at Hamdan's cave. This continued for twenty years, until the eagle died an old creature.
