The Captain of Sohar
الفصلُ الأَوَّلُ: نِداءُ البَحْرِ
Chapter One: The Call of the Sea
كانَ الرُّبَّانُ سَعِيدُ بنُ أَحْمَدَ يَقِفُ عَلَى سَطْحِ سَفِينَتِهِ العَظِيمَةِ، يُحَدِّقُ فِي الأُفُقِ حَيْثُ تَلْتَقِي السَّماءُ بِالبَحْرِ. كانَتِ الرِّياحُ المَوْسِمِيَّةُ قَدْ هَبَّتْ، وَحانَ وَقْتُ الإِبْحارِ إِلى سَواحِلِ الهِنْدِ.
Captain Sa'id bin Ahmad stood upon the deck of his great vessel, gazing at the horizon where sky met sea. The monsoon winds had begun to blow, and the time had come to sail to the shores of India.
قالَ لِبَحَّارَتِهِ بِصَوْتٍ جَهُورِيٍّ: «أَيُّها الرِّجالُ، إِنَّ البَحْرَ يَدْعُونا، وَالثَّرْوَةُ تَنْتَظِرُنا فِي مَوانِئِ كاليكوت. فَهَلْ أَنْتُمْ مُسْتَعِدُّونَ؟»
He said to his sailors in a booming voice: "O men, the sea calls us, and fortune awaits us in the ports of Calicut. Are you prepared?"
صاحَ البَحَّارَةُ بِصَوْتٍ واحِدٍ: «نَعَمْ يا رُبَّانُ! نَحْنُ وَراءَكَ حَتَّى أَقْصى البِحارِ!»
The sailors cried with one voice: "Yes, O Captain! We follow you to the farthest seas!"
الفصلُ الثَّانِي: العاصِفَةُ الكُبْرى
Chapter Two: The Great Storm
بَعْدَ سَبْعَةِ أَيَّامٍ مِنَ الإِبْحارِ، ظَهَرَتْ فِي الأُفُقِ غُيُومٌ سَوْداءُ كَأَنَّها جِبالٌ مِنَ الظَّلامِ. عَرَفَ الرُّبَّانُ سَعِيدٌ أَنَّ عاصِفَةً رَهِيبَةً تَقْتَرِبُ.
After seven days of sailing, black clouds appeared on the horizon like mountains of darkness. Captain Sa'id knew that a terrible storm was approaching.
أَمَرَ رِجالَهُ قائِلاً: «أَنْزِلُوا الأَشْرِعَةَ! اِرْبِطُوا الحِبالَ! وَادْعُوا اللهَ أَنْ يُنَجِّيَنا مِنْ هَذِهِ المِحْنَةِ!»
He commanded his men: "Lower the sails! Secure the ropes! And pray to God to save us from this trial!"
هاجَتِ الأَمْواجُ كَأَنَّها وُحُوشٌ جائِعَةٌ، وَصارَتِ السَّفِينَةُ تَتَمايَلُ بَيْنَ الهاوِيَةِ وَالسَّماءِ. لَكِنَّ الرُّبَّانَ سَعِيدًا وَقَفَ ثابِتًا عِنْدَ الدَّفَّةِ، يُصارِعُ البَحْرَ بِكُلِّ ما أُوتِيَ مِنْ قُوَّةٍ.
The waves raged like hungry beasts, and the ship swayed between the abyss and the sky. But Captain Sa'id stood firm at the helm, wrestling the sea with all his strength.
الفصلُ الثَّالِثُ: النَّجاةُ وَالظَّفَرُ
Chapter Three: Salvation and Triumph
عِنْدَما انْجَلَتِ العاصِفَةُ، وَجَدَ البَحَّارَةُ أَنْفُسَهُمْ قَرِيبِينَ مِنْ ساحِلٍ مَجْهُولٍ. كانَ جَزِيرَةً خَضْراءَ لَمْ يَرَوْها مِنْ قَبْلُ.
When the storm cleared, the sailors found themselves near an unknown shore. It was a green island they had never seen before.
قالَ أَحَدُ البَحَّارَةِ: «يا رُبَّانُ، أَيْنَ نَحْنُ؟»
One of the sailors said: "O Captain, where are we?"
ابْتَسَمَ الرُّبَّانُ وَقالَ: «لَقَدْ قادَنا اللهُ إِلى أَرْضٍ جَدِيدَةٍ. فَلْنَنْزِلْ وَنَسْتَكْشِفْ ما خَبَّأَهُ لَنا القَدَرُ.»
The captain smiled and said: "God has led us to a new land. Let us descend and explore what fate has hidden for us."
وَفِي تِلْكَ الجَزِيرَةِ، وَجَدُوا كُنُوزًا مِنَ اللُّؤْلُؤِ وَالمَرْجانِ، وَعادُوا إِلى صُحارَ أَبْطالاً، يَحْمِلُونَ ثَرْوَةً لَمْ يَحْلُمُوا بِها.
And on that island, they found treasures of pearl and coral, and returned to Sohar as heroes, carrying wealth beyond their dreams.
