For forty years, Pnina had seen him on his balcony. Reading. Smoking. Aging.
One night, the power went out.
"?את צריכה נרות?" he called from his balcony. "Do you need candles?"
"יש לי. תודה." "I have some. Thanks."
"אז... בואי נשב ביחד. יותר בטוח." "So... let's sit together. Safer."
פרק שני | Chapter Two
His name was Shimon. Widower. Retired teacher.
"?למה אף פעם לא דיברנו?" "Why did we never talk?"
"אני לא יודע. הזמן עבר." "I don't know. Time passed."
"ארבעים שנה זה הרבה זמן." "Forty years is a lot of time."
"עדיף מאוחר משלא בכלל." "Better late than never."
פרק שלישי | Chapter Three
"אני זוכר אותך כשהיית צעירה," he said. "I remember you when you were young."
"?באמת?" "Really?"
"היית יפה." "You were beautiful."
"עברו ארבעים שנה." "Forty years have passed."
"את עדיין יפה." "You're still beautiful."
פרק רביעי | Chapter Four
The power returned. They stayed on his balcony.
"אני פוחדת," she admitted. "I'm scared."
"?ממה?" "Of what?"
"שזה יגמר לפני שזה יתחיל." "That this will end before it begins."
"יש לנו את הרגע הזה. זה מספיק." "We have this moment. That's enough."
פרק חמישי | Chapter Five
They married at eighty. The neighbors thought it was strange.
"?מה אתם מבינים?" they answered. "What do you understand?"
"אנחנו חיכינו ארבעים שנה." "We waited forty years."
"?זה לא מאוחר מדי?" "Isn't it too late?"
"מאוחר מדי זה כשאתה מפסיק לנסות." "Too late is when you stop trying."
