Givatayim Garden

Chapter One

For forty years, Pnina had seen him on his balcony. Reading. Smoking. Aging.

One night, the power went out.

"?את צריכה נרות?" he called from his balcony. "Do you need candles?"

"I have some. Thanks."

"So... let's sit together. Safer."

Chapter Two

His name was Shimon. Widower. Retired teacher.

"Why did we never talk?"

"I don't know. Time passed."

"Forty years is a lot of time."

"Better late than never."

Chapter Three

"אני זוכר אותך כשהיית צעירה," he said. "I remember you when you were young."

"Really?"

"You were beautiful."

"Forty years have passed."

"You're still beautiful."

Chapter Four

The power returned. They stayed on his balcony.

"אני פוחדת," she admitted. "I'm scared."

"Of what?"

"That this will end before it begins."

"We have this moment. That's enough."

Chapter Five

They married at eighty. The neighbors thought it was strange.

"What do you understand?"

"We waited forty years."

"Isn't it too late?"

"Too late is when you stop trying."

The End

In Givatayim, in old buildings, people live years alone. Sometimes, all you need is one power outage.
