The checkpoint was Amit's life. Eight hours a day, checking papers.
Then Layla came through. "סליחה, יש לי בעיה עם התעודה." "Sorry, I have a problem with my ID."
Her Hebrew was perfect. Her eyes were more so.

"רמאללה. אני לומדת ברעננה." "Ramallah. I study in Ra'anana."

She came through every day. He started watching for her.
"?עוד בעיות" "More problems?"
"לא. אני רק רוצה לראות אותך." "No. I just want to see you."
"!זה לא בסדר" "This isn't okay!"
"שום דבר פה לא בסדר. אז למה לא זה?" "Nothing here is okay. So why not this?"

Secret meetings. A café in Tel Aviv where no one knew them.
"אם יגלו—" "If they find out—"
"אל תחשוב על זה." "Don't think about it."
"את פלסטינית. אני חייל." "You're Palestinian. I'm a soldier."
"אני אישה. אתה גבר. זה הכל." "I'm a woman. You're a man. That's everything."

A hotel room in Herzliya. Neutral territory.
"!אמית... זה מטורף" "Amit... this is crazy!"
"הדבר הכי שפוי שעשיתי בחיים." "The sanest thing I've done in my life."
"!אנשים יתנגדו. המשפחה שלי—" "People will object. My family—"
"גם שלי. אז מה?" "Mine too. So what?"

He left the army. She left the West Bank. They moved to Berlin.

"כל יום." "Every day."
"?אז למה עזבנו" "So why did we leave?"
"כי שם לא יכולנו לאהוב בחופשיות." "Because there we couldn't love freely."
